Behavior-Integrated Individualized Academic Support Services

UTBS Academy is a specialized academic support program designed to provide individualized education services integrated with behavioral and mental health treatment for students whose needs are best met in a therapeutic context rather than a standard classroom. The Academy operates as part of Utah Behavior Services, now rebranded as Bridgeway Integrated Healthcare Services, a large provider of evidence-based behavioral, mental health, and ABA services across Utah.

Unlike traditional public or independent schools, UTBS Academy does not function as a standalone K–12 school with fixed grade levels. Instead, it adds an academic package of services to the treatment plans of students who are receiving center-based day treatment or behavioral services through Bridgeway. Students typically continue their behavioral and mental health services while participating in Academy instruction, which may include one-on-one or small-group educational support tailored to their individual needs. The program is designed to help learners maintain and advance academic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and other core areas in alignment with individualized goals.

Students served by UTBS Academy are usually those who require close integration between behavioral intervention and academic instruction, such as learners with diagnostic needs — including autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, or behavioral challenges — that make conventional schooling difficult. Instruction is delivered by professionals with a range of training — including special education teaching experience and expertise in behavior-based support — and is coordinated with each student’s treatment team to ensure consistency across learning and therapeutic goals.

UTBS Academy’s services are typically accessed by families already engaged with Bridgeway Integrated Healthcare Services for behavioral or mental health treatment, and enrollment is often contingent on that ongoing care. The Academy itself does not replace a regular school but supplements treatment with structured academic support and development. On the administrative side, students (and families) may work with teachers and clinician teams to create Individual Academic Plans that reflect each learner’s strengths, challenges, and progress benchmarks.
